Thimphu Dushhoe (Thimphu Tsechu)

The capital's largest festival, with Cham dances, markets and public celebration.

Overview

Started in the 17th century by Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye to celebrate the birth of Guru Rinpoche, the Thimphu Tsechu has grown into the country's largest festival by attendance. Over three days the capital comes alive with mask dances, performances, food stalls, traditional music, and street markets. Bhutanese from remote valleys gather in the city dressed in their finest attire, while the central Cham dances take place at Tashichho Dzong. The festival ends with the unfurling of the sacred Thongdrel before sunrise on the final morning. Autumn skies, warm days, and crisp evenings make this one of the finest times to visit.
